Whiplash is an acceleration deceleration injury of the neck. The term describes how forces act on the cervical spine, not which tissue is injured. Some cases are limited to soreness and stiffness. Others involve symptoms that suggest nerve irritation, balance disturbance, or headache pathway involvement.
Why neurological symptoms can occur without fracture
Most urgent care and emergency evaluations focus on ruling out fracture, dislocation, or other immediate threats. Normal X rays or CT scans can be reassuring regarding bone injury, but they do not evaluate the spinal cord, peripheral nerves, vestibular system, or headache generators.
The practical takeaway
When symptoms include tingling, dizziness, headache patterns, or cognitive complaints, it is reasonable to think beyond simple muscle strain. A focused clinical examination can help clarify whether symptoms reflect a neurological phenotype within whiplash associated disorders.
